NOVEMBER 2010
NECIP e-Bulletin
A well known auction website has a 'countdown to Christmas' calendar and festive decoration..how thoughtful?! I'm writing this on Monday evening and it says '40' eeek!
Well, it's November! We have just completed evaluating Summer Slam! and will publish the results on the website after the report has been approved by the NECIP. One lucky family is off to the cinema as the winners of the parent evaluation, and 6 lucky children will each receive a £5 book token next week. Winners were chosen at random (a bit like the lottery!) by my colleague in the north west of the city. October half-term activities once again proved a great success with over 120 children taking part.
Fun with your Family at St Philip's Church hall in Highbury was attended by over 100 parents and their children. We plan to run a similar event on Monday 20th December at The Link, Cosham Baptist Church and in the Highbury area. This will be in partnership with Children's Centres, so look out for publicity coming home.
Theatre Arts are planning to run a Youth Theatre for children aged 10+ at Springfield School, date and time to be confirmed. As If you would like more information please contact Verity Simmons and Rebecca Frost on 07971 667296 or e-mail theatreartsuk@yahoo.com

Highbury Youth Club has temporarily moved to Redwood Park School. The old Highbury Community Centre was being demolished during half term, and the fantastic new building won't be opening until January. The day and time remains the same, every Wednesday during term-time from 6.30 - 8.30, entry 50p for 9 - 13 year olds.
Cosham Youth Club remains closed until building work on the new Children's Centre in The Link is complete, which should be in early December. We are hoping to have an opening party on 17th December for 11 - 16 year olds.
Faith & Football has started with a great initial response. There are still places available, so please contact me if you would like any further information.

You should have received your pocket/fridge health guide 'Should my child go to school today'. I hope that you have found this useful and I know that the School Nurse team would love to receive your feedback.
Cheryl Taylor, Parent Support Advisor, is offering coffee mornings at Redwood Park School, along with timed appointments. Drop-in sessions in partnership with the School Nurse are planned for Court Lane and Solent Schools twice a month. Cheryl attends the Children's Centre Drop-in on a Wednesday and Highbury's Family Friday. If you would like to have a chat with Cheryl about any aspect of parenting, please contact her. Cheryl is also training two parent volunteers - one from Highbury and one from Solent Infant - as Parent Information Contacts. The parent volunteers will be available in the playground to signpost information and will update a noticeboard.

The Grandparents' Association came to Portsmouth in November 2009. Louisa Wearn (Project Manager) is in post to find out what sort of support grandparents in the city need, and to find ways to meet that need - by working with local service providers to improve services for grandparents and to look at setting up new services, such as support groups to help grandparents in the city. Please contact Louisa for more details or to discuss anything - louisa.wearn@grandparents-association.org.uk 023 9229 4726

Parents urged to make survey about children a top priority Families who have their say on priorities to improve the lives of children in Portsmouth could win £50 in high street vouchers. From whether it's important that schools receive glowing Ofsted reports, or how successful joint working has been to tackle drink and drugs among young people, all views count. The consultation is being run by Portsmouth's Children's Trust, who bring together agencies such as health, social services, education and leisure, to improve outcomes for children. The Trust currently has six draft priorities, and wants to know whether parents and carers agree these are the ones to focus on.
Healthy Pompey events include Top tips on preparing healthy family meals from 26th November to 10th December at Drayton Institute and a Walk a mile with our Santa Strolls! on December 14th from Solent Infant and Junior Schools. For more information please visit events 2010 and click on Nov or Dec.
Drayton & Farlington Children's Centre has a great programme of activities for parents-to-be and families with under 5s. These include Play & Sing, Breast Feeding Support Group, Creative Play, Baby Signing Level 1, Parent Information Group, Connors Toy Library, Baby Massage, Boogie Mites, Family Drop-in Group and Physical Play. For more information or to make a booking please contact Louise Barker 07950 896270 or Elouise Standen 07506 527148.
Drayton and Farlington Action Group is still running it Drop'n'Shop Scheme, so if you know an elderly person who may find it hard to carry shopping bags, please put them in contact with the Information Centre 023 9238 0000. The group hires minibuses from Court Lane Junior and Highbury Primary Schools on a Tuesday morning and offers a door to door service (with a smile!) to Sainsburys. The Information Centre can also offer advice on Winter Warmth, Pension Credits, Insulation Grants, Fight the Flu and much more.

Highbury Primary School is a 2010 finalist in The People's Millions, which is a partnership between Big Lottery Fund and ITV, where the public decides which local community projects get up to £50,000 of Lottery funding. Highbury would love you to vote for their project please. Highbury is competing against Fresh Start.
From festive markets and fairs, to fun kids activities and raucous party nights, Portsmouth has got Christmas all rounded up in their Festive Factsheet.
Cosham Christmas Lights Switch On Wednesday 24th November 4.00 to 6.00 p.m.
